* David Pollock is usually in between 7 and 9 AM and again at supper time 5 PM plus. He does not have a telephone answering machine nor email. His trip plan for the Jan 3th cross country skiing is “Zealand” or “Lincoln Woods”. He will make a point of finding out the conditions of both trails by Dec. 31. David says that either trip can readily be completed in 6 hours of skiing at an easy early season pace. The Zealand trip involves more uphill, but is never more than beginners’ slope.

A few basic notes: The Over the Hill Hikers is a hiking group and if you start off on a hike you should plan on finishing the hike with the group. Conditions in the White Mountains can change drastically and quickly..be aware of forecast and possible changes to it and plan gear accordingly. If you are one of leaders who has volunteered to lead a group please find an alternate if you are unable to attend. As hikes, please follow the lead of the leaders, wait at junctions to be sure everyone is with the group, and have fun

Veteran political reporter, Shirley Elder Lyons, working with Elizabeth MacGregor Bates, has produced Over the Hill Hikers, a book that chronicles the ups and downs (literally) of a group of retirees in Sandwich, New Hampshire. They became a very cohesive bunch of happy hikers under Lib's instinctive use of casual leadership. Lib was determined to make the hiking experience fun as well as satisfying. It worked. The hikers just hiked, every Tuesday, and built a unique community along the way.
Lyons is the writer, Bates the doer. Lib, as she is known far and wide, has hiked all around New Hampshire's mountains for 80 years or so. Shirley Elder Lyons has covered Congress for the Washington Star and New Hampshire politics for the Boston Globe. She also has co-written two books; a profile of House Speaker Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neill, and a case study on Capitol Hill lobbying, and edited a book on Sandwich (N.H.) history. And now: the Over the Hill Hikers a truly amazing group.

Make a decision "to go", or "not go", or "turn around" if the activity is
underway. Keep the group together and monitor the condition of the group.
Pick up the " First Aid Kit" from mocha rizing. Locate an alternate leader if unable to keep your commitment...have fun...Be aware of weather conditions so as to advise participants on proper gear. Wait at all trail junctions to insure that the group maintains integrity

Hiker's Duties:
Follow the leader..stay with the group for the duration of the hike. weather changes rapidly in the White Mountains..it is imperative that everyone has adequate weather protection, food, and water should conditions change.. The Over the Hill Hikers is a hiking group and particpants should hike with the group

Dues:
Like every year we have to collet money to pay for supplies, postage, first aid kits etc. So we are asking the usual $5.00 per hiker or walker per year.. Please make out checks payable to Mary Cullen, Box 312, Center sandwich Nh 03227

Pick up the "First Aid Kit" from Mocha Rising. Locate an alternate leader if unable to keep your commitment..have fun..Be aware of weather conditions so as to advise participants on proper gear. Wait at all trail junctions to insure that all participants follow the leader.

Hiker Responsibilities: Follow the leader..stay with the group for the duration of the hike. Weather changes rapidly in the White Mountains..It is imperative that everyone has adequate weather protection, food and water should conditions change..The Over The Hill Hikers is a hiking group and participants should hike with the group

There were great snow conditions for skiing last year and here's hoping for more of the same in 2010..can you believe it!!

There is a also a tuesday group including some OTHH members doing winter hiking to NH 4000 footers...Some 52 WAV hikes will also be included. These are leaders choice hikes as weather conditions can change drastically and quickly.. Typically I would post a tuesday hike on sunday evening with hike suggestions, expected conditions, and suggested and required gear. This should be considered a safe though advanced group ..not for beginners. If you would like to be added to the email list drop me a note at marktaub@metrocast.net and I will get in touch.

A hearty horde of 7 hot and humid hikers tramped up Blueberry in Evans Notch. This group included Muffy Smith, babs Muldrum, Betsy Loughran, Peter Johnson, Henry Metzger, Jim Guppy, and leader Jim Twaddle. Alas, alas, there were no blueberries and the viewing was very limited! We were out at 2:20pm in plenty of time to enjoy ice cream in Conway: so all was not lost!
