Mt Isolation - August 28, 2018

On a day that was hot and humid elsewhere, Dick and Doug did Mt Isolation, down along the Montalban Ridge to the south of Mt Washington. The Glen Boulder Trail takes you up steeply above treeline in a mile and a half. Further up, at over 5100 ft, it ties into the Davis Path, which is taken south almost three miles and down to Isolation at only 4003 ft. Up high, the wind was blowing perhaps 35-40 mph, temperature was around 70, and we couldn't see far through the fog. We had to layer up to keep warm. On the return path, the skies had cleared, giving wonderful but hazy views. Below are Doug at Glen Boulder, then a shot from up at the high junction.

Monroe and Washington - Aug 24, 2018

Taking advantage of a good weather day for doing this hike, Dick went solo, although hiking Mt Washington in summer is hardly solitude. Here he is at the Gem Pool halfway up the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail.

Carter Notch Hut, Aug 23rd, 2018

Cathy Crooker, granddaughter of the late Milton "Red Mac" MacGregor, led a hike to Carter Notch Hut.  Red Mac helped build the hut and was the first hut master back in 1914. Rumor has it that after he passed away, he chose to spend some additional quality time among us and cause a little mischief...see the article below about the 100 year anniversary and the ghost story.

According to Cathy's mother, Lib Crooker Bates, and past den mother of the Over the Hill Hikers, this probably would have been "just like him." He always enjoyed playing practical jokes, so he seems to be carrying on the trend.

August 21, The Tripyramids

John, Pete, Doug, and Dick went up the Pine Bend Trail, off the Kancamagus Highway. The air was cool and dry, great for a hike. We encountered Sharon, who had headed up earlier the same way. We went down the Sabbaday Brook Trail, steeply downhill for a little, then just a gradual descent through the woods. A bit above the falls we opted to bushwhack along the river a bit to avoid two crossings, following a path it seemed others also had taken. The repair work done by the Forest Service on the falls area has been completed and the area is open again to tourist use. The falls are a short walk in from the parking area and well worth the trip in to see - and free!
