What hiking level am I?

What hiking level am I, and how do I get involved?

The Over the Hill Hikers offers several hiking groups designed to match various fitness levels and interests. Whether you're an experienced peak-bagger or prefer a leisurely stroll with scenic stops, we have a place for you!

Our Hiking Group Levels:

A Group (Challenging Ascents): This group is for experienced hikers who enjoy more challenging, longer-distance hikes, often tackling 4,000-foot mountains at or below "book time" (the estimated time for a hike). Many "A" hikers have completed New Hampshire's 48 4,000-footers (some multiple times) and are often working on advanced challenges like the GRID or Red-Lining.

B Group (Moderate Explorations): The "B" group focuses on the 52 With a View mountains, offering a slightly slower pace than the "A" group. Hikes typically range from 3 to 8 miles and are completed at or slightly slower than book time. Towards the middle to end of the hiking season, an occasional 4,000-footer might be included as legs get stronger.

Turtles (Leisurely Rambles): If you prefer a more relaxed pace, the "Turtles" group is for you! These hikes are generally around 3 to 5 miles and emphasize enjoying the scenery, conversation, and taking time for stops to pick mushrooms or blueberries. Ice cream stops are almost always a cherished tradition after a hike!

Friday Walking Group (Casual Strolls): For those looking for even lighter activity, we also have a casual Friday walking group.

What to Expect on Our Hikes:

All Over the Hill Hiker groups are made up of a wonderful mix of people of all ages. Regardless of your group, you can expect:
A brief lunch break at the summit (please pack your own lunch!).
Plenty of opportunities to take photos.
A friendly and supportive atmosphere.

Essential Gear & Safety Recommendations:

Preparedness is paramount for every hiker. It's crucial to be equipped with adequate gear, your 10 hiking essentials, and plenty of food and water for the day's conditions. Before heading out, familiarize yourself with the trail's distance, elevation, and estimated time under ideal conditions. You can read about how to estimate this in the AMC guidebook, or use helpful online tools like the Hiking Time Calculator.

Always check and be prepared for (changing) weather. I recommend using multiple forecast sources like Mountain Forecast and Weather Underground. For current trail conditions, NE Trail Conditions is excellent for checking water crossings, snowpack, and other vital information for your upcoming hike.

As mentioned on our blog, hiking comes with inherent risks. We highly encourage you to print out and complete the Emergency Contact Sheet and keep it in your pack. Additionally, we recommend everyone has the NH Hike Safe Card.

Ready to Join Us? (Local Neighbors Only)

Due to overwhelming interest, we've regrettably reached a point where we cannot expand beyond our local Lakes Region communities. Currently, we have very limited availability for new members, and acceptance depends on the specific group you're interested in joining.

If you are a local neighbor and interested in hiking with us, please send a quick note about yourself and your hiking experience to the email below. To help us ensure a good fit for everyone's enjoyment, please tell us where you currently live and what local hikes you have completed recently.

Sincerely,
Tracy Ripkey Current Den Mother OTHHweb@gmail.com
