Essential 10 hiking items to carry for day hiking

The Ten Essentials

For safety, survival and basic comfort, bring these on every hike:

1. Navigation

•  Map (with protective case)
•  Compass

2. Sun protection

3. Insulation

•  See Clothing options, below

4. Illumination

•  Headlamp or flashlight
•  Extra batteries

5. First-aid supplies

6. Fire

Fire-starting gear:
•  A lighter or matches in a waterproof container
•  Firestarting material

7. Repair tools and kit

•  Knife or multi-tool
•  Repair supplies

8. Nutrition

9. Hydration

10. Emergency shelter

Kicking off 2018 hiking season!

Greetings friends and hikers!



  • April 27th, at 11:30 we will host a pot-luck at the Doris Benz Center in Center Sandwich.  No RSVP is necessary.  Please bring a dish to share.  There is a sign up sheet (which is best accessed from a computer not a phone or iPad) at: Pot luck sign up sheet, click here.
  • Also, Jean Knox is collecting soup recipes to assemble an Over the Hill Hikers soup cookbook!  Please bring your recipes.
  • AND... please save the date for trail maintenance of the Bear Camp River Trail, June 2nd and 30th.  More information to follow.
  • Lastly, we are putting together our hiking schedule for the 2018 hiking season and are looking for volunteers to lead / coordinate the weeks hike.  Here is the link (again, best accessed from a computer, not a cell phone or ipad) for the B Group / Moderate hikes: B group Moderate to difficult 2018 season's hike, click here You will also be able to volunteer for the A group / Difficult hikes (POC is Dick Russell) and the Turtles group / Easy to moderate hikes (POC is Jane Harrington & Sue Speers).  Contact me via email if you need their contact info.
