Mt Tecumseh Sunday January 30, 2023

Five of us had a great winter hike to the summit of Tecumseh. The weather was favorable, with temperatures in the upper 20s to low 30s. There was a slight breeze at the summit and there were a few flurries in the air. We could see the Waterville Valley ski area and the three Tripyramids. The trail was in perfect condition. It was well packed and about a foot wide. There was no ice and all the rocks and roots were buried. It was like walking on a white sidewalk. There were about 20 other hikers on the trail and several skinners. The skinners descended on the ski area trails.

Mt. Israel, on the Lunar New Year, Jan 22nd, 2023

Five of us braved the cold temps to enjoy a winter hike up Mt. Israel.  The conditions were great.  We used microspikes the whole way, but carried our snowshoes in the event the higher elevation required them.  The summit was "socked in" as the upcoming storm approaches, but the anticipated new snow is exciting.

Soup and Snowshoe, Jan 20th, 2023

Our soup and snowshoe days are so enjoyable.  This week Jane and Susan hosted a lovely short walk in the woods of Moultonborough.  We viewed Lee's Pond and the Red Hill River along the way.  The best part is the social gathering and soup... life IS good.

January 15, 2023 - The Scaur - Waterville Valley

A large group of 13 of us took a hike in and up to a bump called The Scaur, at the upper end of Waterville Valley, on a nice sunny Sunday. The Scaur has a nice outlook, looking over to the ski area and south to Mt Sandwich. From there we went on through the woods to a mini-Flume, where we had lunch. Then it was back out the way we came. Below are all 13 of us at the Flume.

David Stuntz, lives to the great age of 102

This is to announce the passing of David Stuntz who died at the Maristhill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Waltham, Massachusetts on December 29, 2022 at the age of 102. Dave lived in Sandwich with his wife, Hilda, for many years, before moving to Brunswick, Maine after her death.

Dave married Hilda and joined the Navy after graduating from Harvard College in 1942. He served for two years in the Pacific as an officer aboard the USS Steele DE8.  He enrolled at Harvard Business School upon discharge from the Navy in 1946.  After graduation, he commenced a 35 year business career, during which he worked at three different technology companies and spent seven years in Europe, before retiring to Sandwich in 1982.

Dave was an active resident of Sandwich and an early member of the Over the Hill Hikers, who formed his and Hilda’s social circle.  Other hikers at that time included Guthrie and Sue Speers, Jocelyn Gutchess, Dick Lyons, Jim Twaddle, MF Hambrook, Lib and Charlie Crooker, and Claire and Bill Smith, among others.  Dave completed the 4,000 footers three times and participated in several hiking trips to Europe arranged by Penny Pitou for the Over the Hill Hikers.  Dave’s golden retriever, Nutmeg, was an American Kennel Club obedience champion.  Shortly after his arrival in Sandwich, Dave offered a popular series of obedience classes to Sandwich dog owners in Dolly Gifford’s barn. Dave served on the committee responsible for building Spokesfield Common, originally planned as housing for senior citizens.

Dave is survived by his daughter Sharon Le Noc’h of Paimpol, France, his grandson Georges Le Noc’h, Georges’ wife Avisheh and their daughters Farrah and Leyla of Cambridge, Massachusetts,  grandson Steven Le Noc’h of Montreal, Canada, his wife Marie, and their son Arthur.

Dave will be interred next to Hilda in Vittum Hill Cemetery at a date to be determined.  Arrangements for interment and a memorial service will be announced when they are available.

Today a large group of 17 gathered to celebrate the life of our friend and fellow hiker, Doug Butler.

Doug passed away suddenly before Christmas, and today we honored him at Lonesome Lake, which was the first hike he joined the Over the Hill Hikers on in May of 2021.

The hikers above are... Back row L to R: Lucie, John, Wharton, Jane, Patsy, Doug W., Steve, Matt, Dick, Pam, Laura, and Brad.  Kneeling L to R: Cathy, Tracy, Katherine, Leanne, and Katy.

Pam made a carrot cake to add to the life celebration.  Doug was an accomplished hiker, who certainly left us all with great memories of hikes we enjoyed with him.  He will be missed.

Snowshoe & Soup is BACK!!

After a long pause we have finally resumed our winter Snowshoe & Soup outings! Although today's trip required only microspikes, a group of 16 hikers enjoyed a lovely snowy walk at Chapman Sanctuary in Sandwich. Griff and I were delighted to then host everyone at our house for soup.

Look for future Friday Snowshoe & Soup announcements by signing up for the list at othhsnowshoe@gmail.com.
