"A" Hike July 29 Sandwich Mtn and Jennings Peak

With all the hot weather expected on Tuesday, the "A" hike was changed to Monday and instead of hiking Isolation, the hike was up Sandwich Mtn. and Jennings Peak, 2 52 WAV summits. Isolation will be rescheduled at some point.

We hiked up the Sandwich Mtn Trail and down the Drakes Brook Trail. The weather was hot and muggy but the trail surface is quite soft compared to the hard jumble of rocks usually found in the Whites. The humidity limited our views but we were able to see Guyot, Bond, Bond Cliff, Carrigain, Hancock, South Hancock, Lafayette, Lincoln, Little Haystack, Liberty, Flume, Cannon, both Kinsmans and Moosilauke. Along the Sandwich Range, we saw both Osceolas, Tecumseh, PB & J, all three Tripyramids, Whiteface and Passaconaway.

Below are John, Dick and Larry.

Next week's hike (Aug 6) is scheduled to be Owl's Head. Please keep an eye on your email for any updates.

"A" Hike July 24 Monroe & Washington

The group was provided with excellent views once again on Wednesday. Six hikers started at the bottom of the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail, just below the Cog Railway Station, and hiked up to the Lake of the Clouds Hut. Ginnette, Dick, Doug, Frank, John and Larry enjoyed a brief rest there before continuing. Ginnette went up to the Westside Trail and down the Jewell Trail. The others climbed up Monroe (5384) on the Monroe Loop, went back to the hut and then headed up to Washington (6288) on the Crawford Path.

The weather was perfect for hiking and viewing. We could see Cabot, The Bulge, The Horn, Starr King, Waumbek, the whole Carter Moriah Range, all of the northern and southern Presidentials, Tom, Field, Willey, Kearsarge North, Hale, both Twins, Guyot, Bond, Carrigain, Lafayette, Lincoln, Little Haystack, Liberty, Flume, Moosilauke, both Osceloas, all 3 Tripyramids, Whiteface, Passaconaway and Chocorua. We also saw Wildcat, Bretton Woods, Attitash and Loon ski areas. We could see Killingon and Pico Peak in Vermont.

We descended along the Gulfside and Jewell trails.

Below are Doug and Frank heading down from Washington. It's hard to believe there is a trail among the rocks. And yes, that is a small patch of snow just below the Edmands Col to the left of Adams. Adams is just beyond Doug and Madison is to the right.

July 25th, B group hikes Welch-Dickey

A large group of us enjoyed the low humidity, clear skies and pleasant temperatures for an end of July hike up the beautiful Welch Dickey loop.  The open ledges and scenic vistas can both take your breath away. The highest bump on the horizon is Moosilauke.

B hike to Lowe's Bald Spot, July 18th, 2019

Over the Hill Hikers reached Lowe's Bald Spot on the side of Mt. Washington today.  The peaks didn't clear for us, but the views were still nice and the weather perfect for hiking.

B hike to Mt. Roberts, July 11th, 2019

Eleven “B” hikers ascended Mt. Roberts today, heading up the trail at 8:30 am to get down before thunderstorms. Finding the trail head wasn’t easy, despite maps and cell phones. Roberts needs better signage! Though several of us has hiked Roberts before, we managed to set off on the wrong trail, adding a few extra steps to our mileage for the day. Weather was hazy but views were still lovely. The rain held off and the ice cream vendor near Shannon Pond was open for business when we returned to the cars.

"A" Hike July 16 Twins & Galehead

The hike was another great one for views. Six of us (Pam, Dick, Doug, John, Larry and Doug's neighbor Sam) hiked N. Twin, S. Twin and Galehead on Tuesday. The weather was mostly clear but there was a brief afternoon shower on our way down. We went up the N. Twin Trail, across the ridge on the N. Twin Spur, down to the Galehead Hut on the Garfield Ridge Trail, up to Galehead and back on the Frost Trail and then back down on the Garfield Ridge Trail and the Gale River Trail.

While on the summits, we saw Starr King, Waumbeck, Adams, Jefferson, Clay, Washington, Monroe, Franklin, Eisenhower, Pierce, Webster, Tom, Field, Willey, Kearsarge North, Hale, Zealand, Guyot, all the Bonds, Owl's Head, Carrigan, the Hancocks, the whole Franconia Ridge from Garfield to Flume, Moosilauke, the Osceloas, Tecumseh, all Tripyramids, Passaconaway and Chocorua. We also saw parts of Loon and Cranmore ski areas.

** Reminder ***
The Planning Meeting is Thursday July 18 at 7pm at John's house. The hikes for August, September and October will be planned. Please attend or provide your hiking desires to John.

Next week's hike is Monroe and Washington.

"A" Hike July 9 Flume & Liberty

Another beautiful hike on Tuesday. Six of us (Pam, Dick, Doug, Frank, Larry and Dick's granddaughter Scottlyn) started from Lincoln Woods and hiked up to Mt Flume via the Lincoln Woods and Osseo trails. We then continued on the Franconia Ridge Trail to Liberty and descended on the Liberty Spring Trail to the Flume Visitor Center.

The views from Flume and Liberty were excellent although there was quite a bit of haze in the distance. We did see the following: Adams, Jefferson, Clay, Washington, Willey, N Twin, S Twin, Galehead, Guyot, West Bond, Bond, Bond Cliff, Owls Head, Hancock, S Hancock, Carrigain, Lafayette, Lincoln, Little Haystack, Cannon, N Kinsman, S Kinsman, Moosilauke, Osceola, E Osceola, Tecumseh, all 3 Tripyramids, Whiteface, Passaconaway and Chocorua.

"A" Hike June 24 Kinsmans

Seven of us hiked to the North Peak and South Peak of Kinsman Mtn. on Monday June 24. The weather was superb, offering tremendous views from the summits. We stopped at Lonesome Lake and the Lonesome Lake Hut. Pam and Doug took a slight detour to see Kinsman Pond at 3750 feet. We started at Lafayette Place Campground and went up the Lonesome Lake, Fishin' Jimmy and Kinsman Ridge trails.

The views from the summits included, Cannon, Starr King, Waumbek, Cabot, Lafayette, Lincoln, Little haystack, Liberty, Flume, some of the Bonds, Osceola, East Osceola and many in the southern Whites. In Vermont, the peaks of Mansfield, Camel's Hump, Pico and Killington were spotted. I'll have to bring a check list with me on future hikes as it is too easy to forget what we've seen.

Above are Frank, Sandy, Denise, Dick, Pam and Doug. Bob was being camera shy.

We hope others can join us for the great hikes, views and company.
