This is to announce the passing of David Stuntz who died at the Maristhill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Waltham, Massachusetts on December 29, 2022 at the age of 102. Dave lived in Sandwich with his wife, Hilda, for many years, before moving to Brunswick, Maine after her death.
Dave married Hilda and joined the Navy after graduating from Harvard College in 1942. He served for two years in the Pacific as an officer aboard the USS Steele DE8. He enrolled at Harvard Business School upon discharge from the Navy in 1946. After graduation, he commenced a 35 year business career, during which he worked at three different technology companies and spent seven years in Europe, before retiring to Sandwich in 1982.
Dave was an active resident of Sandwich and an early member of the Over the Hill Hikers, who formed his and Hilda’s social circle. Other hikers at that time included Guthrie and Sue Speers, Jocelyn Gutchess, Dick Lyons, Jim Twaddle, MF Hambrook, Lib and Charlie Crooker, and Claire and Bill Smith, among others. Dave completed the 4,000 footers three times and participated in several hiking trips to Europe arranged by Penny Pitou for the Over the Hill Hikers. Dave’s golden retriever, Nutmeg, was an American Kennel Club obedience champion. Shortly after his arrival in Sandwich, Dave offered a popular series of obedience classes to Sandwich dog owners in Dolly Gifford’s barn. Dave served on the committee responsible for building Spokesfield Common, originally planned as housing for senior citizens.
Dave is survived by his daughter Sharon Le Noc’h of Paimpol, France, his grandson Georges Le Noc’h, Georges’ wife Avisheh and their daughters Farrah and Leyla of Cambridge, Massachusetts, grandson Steven Le Noc’h of Montreal, Canada, his wife Marie, and their son Arthur.
Dave will be interred next to Hilda in Vittum Hill Cemetery at a date to be determined. Arrangements for interment and a memorial service will be announced when they are available.
