What an epic day. As the locals say, it was a 50 cent day. Just perfect, blue skies and low humidity with comfortable temperatures.
We made the 2 hour drive north to hike the Kilkenny Ridge Trail from the South Pond Recreation Area. What a beautiful area this is. The pond is so clean, and the facilities are very nice.
We hiked over to Devils Hopyard, a few in the group were faster, and some of us were doing anything we could just to not slip on the very TREACHEROUS, wet and slippery rocks. This was a challenging stretch, and the slippery rocks were plentiful. As a few of the faster people starting heading back, a little disappointed from the end of the section, most of us decided to turn around just before the last .1 to the end. No regrets though, as it was a ridiculous stretch. Getting back to the smooth (and very muddy) Kilkenny trail was a huge relief.
The water crossings were manageable, and the hike to Rogers Ledge was a very "easy" (and muddy) hike. The summit is SPECTACULAR, with majestic views and ledges that drop off to the abyss of a forest below. Miles of gorgeous scenery in every direction. We counted 11 moose poop sightings on the hike, and countless areas of deep mud. The day was a 10! A great addition to the 52 With a View.
