June 26th, B hike Mt. Pemigewasset

Today, eleven hikers took to Pemigewasset Mountain on this (rare) beautiful and sunny day!

I say it was rare, but in all likeliness there's some statistic that could prove otherwise... but after two weeks of canceled hikes due to rain, it seems like it's a rare day.  None the less, it was wonderful, and the hike was too!

We staged a car at the Indian Head Resort, and started our accent up at the Flume Visitor Center's Pemigewasset Trail.  The summit was beautiful.  (one of the 52 WAV)  We enjoyed the Indian Head Trail going down, it seemed a bit steep at the top, but we found a rhythm, and the river along the way was a nice visual distraction.  A great hike, with great views.

Doug sharing with us the names of the mountains that you could see from Mt. Pemigewasset.  I believe there was Lafayette, Lincoln, Little Haystack, Liberty and Flume, as well as both Osceola's.

Volunteerism, it's so rewarding!

Eight volunteers worked on four sections of the Bearcamp River Trail on Saturday, June 22nd.  Thanks to everyone who helped: Rose Roberts, Pam Alexander, Mark Longley, Griff O’Brien, Jane Albert, Shirley Stanek, Cynthia Birr, and Jean Knox.

This means that approximately 62 hours of volunteer work were given by 18 volunteers (10 on June 8th, see previous post) to do maintenance along this beautiful hiking trail.

We could not omit our thanks for the 25 hours of trail work that Fred Lavigne, Steve Swift, and four volunteers did from the Hyde Mowing School to maintain Sandwich Notch Park.

OR, the additional 2.5 hours of work along the lovely Red Hill Pond Trail that Fred did!  Thank you so much!!!

If you are interested in helping out with trail maintenance in the future, please let us know!  We would love to have your helping hands!

"A" Hike June 18 Eisenhower

Seven hikers climbed to the summit of Eisenhower (4780) on Tuesday June 18. We hiked the Edmands Path. The hikers were Pam, Bob, Dick, Doug, Frank, John and Larry, a new hiker with OTHH. Bob and Pam continued along the Crawford Path to the summit of Pierce (4310).

With the threat of rain that we have experienced so far this season, it was well worth the hike to get phenomenal 360 degree views from the summit of Eisenhower. Looking to the north along the Presidentials, we could see Jefferson (4k), Clay, Washington (4k), Monroe (4k) and Franklin. To the east was Isolation (4k). To the southeast was Kearsarge North (52WAV). Immediately to the south were Pierce (4k), Jackson (4k) and Webster (52WAV). Further south were Passaconaway (4k), Whiteface (4k), the Sleepers, Sandwich Dome (52WAV), the Tripyramids (4k), Carrigain (4k), the Hancocks (4k), Osceola (4k) and East Osceola (4k). Tecumseh (4k) just peaking above the saddle between the Osceolas. And Chocoura (52WAV) was visible in the distance. To the southwest were Hale (4k), Tom (4k), Field (4k) and Willey (4k). Further away were the Twins (4k), the Bonds (4k), Layette (4k) and Lincoln (4k). Looking north and slightly west were Starr King (52WAV), Waumbek (4k), Cabot (4k) and The Horn (52WAV). Far, far away in Vermont, we could see Camel's Hump and Mansfield. These mountains are on the Vermont 4000 footer list and are 75 miles from Eisenhower. For ski areas, we spotted Cranmore, Attitash and Bear Peak, Bretton Woods and the North Peak of Loon.

"A" Hike June 4 Mt Cabot

Pam, Doug, Marie, and Dick did the Mt Cabot, Bulge, and Horn loop on Tuesday, in good weather (finally). The pic atop Cabot was by another hiker. The temperature up there was a cool 40 F. The second pic shows a trio of Trillium flowers on the way down.
